History

JW actors studio developed SKIT™, a program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. SKIT was inspired when a father inquired about a class for his son with Autism to Jody Wood the director of JW actors studio.

Jody began researching and developing best practices for a program that would assist/serve individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger’s Syndrome and other developmental disabilities with enhanced communication and socialization skills.

Initial programs were conducted at the Galloway Middle School’s FUN (Friends United Now) after school program in Galloway Township, NJ. The results were overwhelmingly positive. Students loved the sessions and more importantly, were very engaged! The professionals who participated were very inspired and surprised by the results. The staff (consisting of teachers and a psychologist) shared that they had never seen such a connection among the group. Impressed by the fact that the students were able to quickly let their guard down, the staff attributed it to the SKIT programs’ safe atmosphere and customized improvisational techniques developed to address their students’ needs. The SKIT program helped the class work on communication, listening, eye contact, and self-control skills!

Especially struck with the fact that most young adults with ASD and Asperger’s Syndrome have a very high unemployment rate and “under employment” rate mostly because of lack of critical listening and social skills, SKIT set out to establish a well-formed program that can be delivered to all individuals regardless of age, in a recreational or academia setting.

Through its program SKIT has seen increased workplace readiness, meaningful relationships and friendships begin; stronger communication skills and has even inspired students try to perform at local theaters.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a person with a developmental disability, or other special needs please contact us and SKIT will be happy to discuss how our workshops can make a difference in your child or young adult’s life.
